What is my Home Library?

Use the chart below to determine which of Emory's libraries is your Home Library, according to your affiliation with the university. Click on a library name to go to that library's home page. Your Home library is also indicated on your user information records in ILLiad and EUCLID.

In rare cases, you may be contacted by the the ILL office at your original Home library to determine if, because of the nature of your research, another Home library would be appropriate in ILLiad for ILL purposes only.

What is ILLiad ?

ILLiad is an acronym for InterLibrary Loan internet accessible database and is the electronic system that has managed interlibrary loan (ILL) and document delivery requests at Emory since January 2001.

ILLiad enables you to:

  • Register once so that you will not have to enter any personal information when placing requests
  • Update your registration information online as needed
  • Check the status of and/or edit your requests online
  • Request ILL renewals online
  • Resubmit canceled requests online
  • Receive automatic e-mail notices regarding the status of your requests

ILLiad also provides:

  • Streamlined request processing by library staff so that requested items arrive more quickly
  • Electronic delivery of articles via the web

Why do I have to register with ILLiad?

Registration with ILLiad is a one-time process which serves the following purposes:

  • Entering your contact information and delivery preferences enables library staff to communicate effectively with you about your requests and to deliver requested materials accurately when they arrive.
  • Entering your departmental or school affiliation allows the libraries to track the demand for ILL and document delivery services from different parts of the university so that the libraries can improve our services and collections to better meet researchers needs.
  • Your contact information and delivery preferences are stored in ILLiad and are linked to each request you submit so, unless this information changes, you'll never need to enter it in ILLiad again.

Please note that it is your responsibility to keep your contact information and delivery preferences current in the ILLiad system. Changes made with other offices on campus (like the Registrar or Human Resources) will not be reflected in ILLiad, nor will changes made in ILLiad be transferred to any other system.

Your personal and request information in ILLiad is confidential and will be used primarily for processing your requests and communicating with you about them. In addition, the libraries generate reports about various aspects of ILL and document delivery activity. However, we will never include information that identifies an individual requester in any report without his/her explicit permission.

What is interlibrary loan and what are my library's ILL policies and procedures?

Interlibrary loan (ILL) is the process by which a library requests materials from and/or supplies materials to another library. The purpose of interlibrary loan is to obtain, upon request of a library user, materials not available in the user's local [i.e., Emory] library (National Interlibrary Loan Code for the United States). Therefore, the Emory libraries engage in interlibrary loan when they request materials from or supply materials to libraries outside Emory University.

Interlibrary loan services at Emory are available only to Emory students, faculty and staff. Other library users should contact their primary academic, public or other library regarding interlibrary loan services.

Click on the library name below for information about the interlibrary loan services offered by your Home library.

What is document delivery and what document delivery services do the Emory Libraries offer?

In the broadest sense, document delivery is the provision of books, articles, etc. from any source upon request, including interlibrary loan. However, most Emory libraries define document delivery more narrowly to mean the delivery of items from Emory library collections to Emory students, faculty and staff. The Emory libraries provide a variety of document delivery services, including delivery of items from from storage, between the the Atlanta and Oxford campuses and/or from their own collections.

In June 2006, the Storage Library began using ILLiad to deliver journal articles to Emory students, faculty and staff, in addition to delivering entire books and journal volumes to the owning library. Requesters must be registered in ILLiad to receive journal articles from Storage. Articles from Storage will be delivered according to the delivery preference indicated in ILLiad. If you wish to receive storage articles electronically, contact your ILL Office to be sure that your electronic delivery preference is set to "Yes" in ILLiad.

Click on the library name below for information about the document delivery services provided by that library. Please note that many of these services are limited to library users from a particular department or school and/or with a particular status (e.g. faculty).

How does electronic delivery of articles work?

Electronic delivery of interlibrary loan articles (via the web) is available to all Emory students, faculty and staff. The Storage Library also will begin offering electronic delivery of journal articles in June 2006.

All new ILLiad users are now set to receive documents electronically by default. If you do not wish to receive documents electronically, please contact your ILL office to have your setting changed. Please also contact your ILL office if you registered in ILLiad before electronic delivery was available and now wish to change your delivery setting to electronic.

Please note that we may not be able to deliver all article-length documents electronically. While we should be able to electronically deliver most documents that we receive electronically, not all items are supplied this way. When electronic delivery is not possible, we will notify users via e-mail that a paper copy of the requested item is available for pickup at their usual location.

Users set to receive electronic documents will be notified via e-mail when requested articles are available for viewing. To view electronic document(s), logon to ILLiad, click on the Electronic Documents button under View/Edit, and click on the Transaction Number of the document you wish to view.

The documents will be in PDF format, so you will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 4.0 or higher) installed in order to view them. All library and computer lab workstations already have this software loaded. If you need to download or update Acrobat Reader on your personal workstation, you can do so for free via the Adobe® download site.

Electronic documents will be available via ILLiad for 30 days or until they are deleted by the user, whichever is earlier.

Why don't I see all my older requests when I look at my request history?

ILLiad was implemented at Emory in January 2001. Only requests submitted since that time will be in ILLiad. In time, older records will be purged from ILLiad. However, our policy will be to keep requests online for three to five years for statistical purposes and to comply with record keeping requirements of the copyright law.

What web browser should I use?

You need a web browser that can handle forms, tables, and, preferably, one that can handle frames. We recommend either Internet Explorer or Firefox, versions 3.0 or higher. Both browsers are available for all Windows and Macintosh O/S operating systems.

Is security a problem if I use a public workstation?

There are computers with internet access available for your use in many locations. These include all of the libraries and computer laboratories on the Atlanta and Oxford campuses. Library and/or AAIT staff can assist you in using these computers.

Security should not be a problem if you use caution when using shared workstations. However, you should be aware that web browsers cache information and create a history file on the local workstation. This allows a subsequent user of the workstation to access the system under your name using the browser's Back button to recall a page from the cache, or by finding a page with your personal information in the browser's history file. If you are concerned about the security of your interlibrary loan requests and/or personal information in ILLiad, you can take the following steps:

  • Access ILLiad only from your personal computer or an otherwise secure workstation.
  • Access ILLiad from a public workstation in the library or a computer lab and be sure to exit from the web browser before you leave the workstation. This prevents the Back button from accessing the pages you were using.

Why does my browser say that you're sending a cookie? What's in it?

The Active Server Pages technology that ILLiad uses to provide live reporting via the web sends a Session ID to be stored on your machine. You can refuse this cookie and still be able to use the ILL web pages and ILLiad without any problems.
